Challenges are being faced by Ship Owners in relation to the IMO 2020 Global Sulphur Limit legislation.
IMO has set a global limit for Sulphur content in fuel oil used on board ships of 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) from 1 January 2020. This will significantly reduce the amount of Sulphur oxide (Sox) emanating from ships and should have health and environmental benefits for the world, particularly for populations living close to coasts.
In order to comply with the Sulphur cap limit of 2020, most ships must apply and implement an approved abatement technology or alternatively, convert existing combustion equipment to safely accommodate the consumption of Low Sulphur Fuels or LNG.
